Rúben Guerreiro is another prodigy from the Axeon Hagens Berman U23 team that has successfully advanced many young cyclists to the WorldTour. Rúben, 22, will dive into his first pro contract with Trek-Segfredo and the young Portuguese welcomes the honor to ride alongside fellow countryman André Cardoso, a rider he has followed over the years and uses as a reference for his own prospering career.
Rúben began cycling at an early age, racing mountain bikes until he was 16 years old when he made the switch to the road. He flourished, and racing on knobby tires was quickly history. In 2014, Rúben caught the attention of Trek-Segafredo when he won Volta a Portugal do Futuro and continued showing his promise in 2015. Last season he upped the ante, grabbing a victory in Gran Premio Palio del Recioto, (a prominent U23 race in Italy that was also won by Fabian Cancellara in 2000 and Yaroslav Popovych in 2001), a third in Liège-Bastogne-Liège U23, and 13th overall in the Tour of California against the big boys. He also added the U23 National Champion to his palmares.
Rúben, a strong climber, displays an aggressive smartness in races and embraces pressure. Although he knows 2017 will be a year to do everything the directors ask - he cheers the challenge of riding support for Bauke Mollema and Alberto Contador - he would jump at the opportunity to go for a win. He has targeted the Ardennes Classics, hopes to represent his country at the World Championships, and sees the Tour of California as a possible opportunity to go for a win – and if that should not transpire, he will, at the very least, be able to indulge in his favorite food: Mexican!
